Berrington Hall
Having had a study session booked to see some of the Snowshill Collection's Stays, we decided to go a day early to have the chance to walk about the National Trust Property first and see what was in the rest of their displays.
In this post we're mainly going to put some of the photos we took of the Pride and Prejudice Displays. The more in-depth study photos from our study session will be done on a proper page for proper perusal and including some of our notes and diagrams. Please see the following links here:
At the moment, being shown to the public are some of the examples of costumes made for the original BBC Pride and Prejudice drama. Mr Darcy's outfit, and most interesting to us, breeches were in the first room you come to.
Sorry about the slight blurred quality of the photos - my camera is beginning to not deal very well with strong lighting!
We're just beginning to research 18th century breeches to a deeper level so seeing these was quite interesting. They seem beautifully made and it would have been lovely to be able to have a look at the inside detail of the Waistband Welt Pkt. Having sampled a pair of breeches, as usual, loads of questions cropped up - therefore it is interesting to see another persons interpretation of an original garment. Their Welt sits indented in with top-stitching around the pkt on the waistband. We've copied the basic pattern from a pair in the Bath Fashion Musuem Collection and our sample had the welt pocket sitting out on top of the fabric as on a jacket. It's highlighted the possibility that either there were two ways of putting in a pocket or the fashion and technique had changed in the 50 years from our breeches to the ones this reproduction was based on. On our blog we have a whole page
designated to the Breeches we saw at the Bath Fashion Museum - please click here to be taken to view that page.
On the next mannequin was Mr Darcy's shirt and again it is actually wonderfully made. there's a nice CF opening detail to it and it'd be interesting to see their notes on it and if this shirt was based on an original.
These costumes were on display in the first room and you can see this room large and spacious in the background.
Below, continuing in the Pride and Prejudice theme are some of the ladies costumes including one of Miss Bingley's dresses.
In the above image you also have one of Elizabeth's dresses - here you can see just the attention to detail in the arrangement at the hem of the dress and the fine work of the bodices. They really quite stunning and somehow look nicer and more real here on the mannequins than in the programme.
